Here is an email we received from the Colchester Rescue Squad Chief restating the importance of having prominently displayed address numbers on our mobile homes.

Thanks for your cooperation

Gail,

When emergency services respond to a residence we are sometimes delayed when the residence’s address numbers are not prominently displayed. In areas that have many houses on a street, such as Westbury, our crews are so appreciative when they are looking for the house numbers and then they see large, reflective numbers on a house, this confirms they are at the correct address. When time is of the essence, as it is for medical and fire incidents a lot of time is saved when every house number is visible essentially pointing an arrow from where we are to where we need to go. The configuration of these numbers should be:

  • Large – Minimum of 3” in height
  • Reflective – To be seen at night when shining a light
  • Contrasting to their background – Black number on white wall, white number on dark wall
  • Visible area – To be seen from sitting in a car from the roadway at or near the driveway, this could be out near the road on a post or on the house high enough that parked cars do not block them
  •

I know everyone has experienced the need to find an address in an area they are unfamiliar with and have thought “Boy, if they would just put a number on these buildings it would be easier for me to find!” Emergency responders do not want to have to slow down and try and guess if they are at the right address or find a displayed address only to realize they past the correct address about 5 houses ago. This is not because we are impatient, this is because someone called us for a true emergency and we need to make contact with this person as soon as we can.

I hope this helps and we here are Colchester Rescue appreciate what the residents of Westbury are trying to do to ensure quick identification of every residence.

Please reach out if you have any questions,

Scott
